New journal strengthens publisher’s and scholarly association’s Communication Studies portfolios while addressing calls for greater inclusion, diversity, equity, and access in scholarship; call for papers underway.

Taylor & Francis (T&F), a global leader in academic publishing, and National Communication Association (NCA) are announcing the launch of a new journal, Communication and Race, adding even more robust scholarship to their strong Communication Studies portfolios.

This is the 12th journal Taylor & Francis publishes on behalf of NCA, a U.S. non-profit scholarly association focused on advanced communications studies for scholars, teachers, and practitioners. According to the publishers, the launch of this journal contributes to the need for greater inclusion, diversity, equity, and access (IDEA) within the field of both study and profession, as well as in the academic publishing industry-at-large.

Communication and Race will be part of T&F’s “Open Select” Humanities, Media, and Arts portfolio and will be published under the company’s Routledge imprint. A call for papers is currently underway, and researchers and scholars can submit through the Taylor & Francis Submission Portal, which provides a streamlined submission process and an industry-leading response time for authors and researchers, no matter their career stage.

As per the publication’s aims and scope description, the highly anticipated new journal is unique in the field, as “it provides a distinct space for building on the theories and epistemologies of Black, Ethnic, Latinx, Indigenous, and Asian studies scholars—including non-Western perspectives.” The first issue is slated for release in early 2024.

“The new journal strengthens our Communication Studies portfolio by creating a dedicated journal to complement critical work already published across our journals in this area, and to attract more submissions on this highly topical and growing body of research,” said Sophie Wade, Portfolio Manager at Taylor & Francis.

Echoing Wade’s optimism regarding the pending launch, NCA’s Executive Director, Shari Miles-Cohen, Ph.D., said the addition of Communication and Race to the scholarly corpus will help drive the academic discussion among diverse scholars and practitioners in Communication Studies as related to IDEA.

Miles-Cohen added, “This journal intends to publish articles that focus on the resilience and excellence of people, not just the inequalities that beset them. In other words, we want to highlight this journal’s departure from a deficit model of looking at race, people, and their condition in society.”

Armond R. Towns, Ph.D., an Associate Professor in the School of Journalism and Communication at Carleton University, will serve as the inaugural editor for the new journal. To learn more or to submit a paper, click here.
