Author honored with membership in The Order of Canada

CRC Press is proud to announce that author Ernest Small has been honored with appointment to The Order of Canada, the highest civilian honor in Canada.  He was presented with the award by Canada’s 29th Governor-General, Julie Payette, in a ceremony held at Rideau Hall, a spectacular set of buildings and allied grounds in the capital city, Ottawa.

Appointments are made by the Governor General on the recommendation of the Advisory Council for the Order of Canada. Created in 1967, the Order of Canada recognizes outstanding achievement, dedication to the community and service to the nation in all walks of life that contribute to society. This recognition is quite exclusive: only a little more than 100 people receive it annually. Those who bear the Order’s iconic snowflake insignia are said to “represent the ever-evolving definition of this country and continue to push back the limits of the impossible.

The official citation reads: “Ernest Small has helped grow the field of botanical science in Canada. Principal scientist with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, he specializes in researching the evolution and classification of economically important plants, particularly food, forage and medicinal species. Highly sought after as an expert adviser, he is best known for his work on hemp and medicinal marijuana. A prolific communicator, he has shared knowledge with the general public and scientific audiences alike through his highly readable books and research papers on agricultural crops and plant biodiversity.”

Ernest Small has authored three CRC Press titles including; Ernest Small has authored three CRC Press titles includingTop 100 Exotic Food Plants, Cannabis and North American Cornucopia.  Dr. Small commented on his recognition: “My publishing career has been critical to my being awarded this honor, and my three recent books published by Taylor & Francis have been among my most important achievements.”
