Megan Markle victim of “white racist attacks”, say racism experts in new book

7th April 2021

Book cover for Revealing Britain's Systemic RacismIn this timely new book, which is dedicated to the global Black Lives Matter movement, leading scholars Kimberley Ducey and Joe R. Feagin examine Megan Markle’s entry and place within the British royal family. By questioning the long-held, but largely anecdotal beliefs about racial progressiveness in the UK, the authors provide an original counter-narrative about how Markle’s experiences as a biracial royal can help illuminate contemporary forms of racism in Britain.

Revealing Britain’s Systemic Racism identifies the plethora of ways in which centuries-old racism continues to influence national conversations and policies in the UK, often through the media and British commentariat. The authors challenge romanticized notions of racial inclusivity and argue that Markle has been framed as a “trophy” of diversity to symbolise an “end of racism” in the UK, while in fact this portrayal only serves to obscure white-racism in wider society.

The book makes a unique and significant contribution to the debate following the fallout of the Oprah Winfrey interview and is a must-read for anyone interested in contemporary racism, sociology, and the British royal family.
