Taylor & Francis Group partner with Royal Statistical Society to sponsor the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences MSc teaching programme

Taylor & Francis Group announced today it will be working with the Royal Statistical Society (RSS) to sponsor the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) and its MSc teaching programme for a minimum of four years.

The sponsorship fund will be used to cover travel costs for Royal Statistical Society members to teach local MSc students at AIMS centres across Africa which will assist in the much-needed growth of the discipline across Africa.

Taylor & Francis’ statistics programme is well-developed with over 45 journals in statistics and probability, including the journals of the American Statistical Association.

Executive Director of the RSS Hetan Shah said, “The Royal Statistical Society is delighted to be working with Taylor & Francis in building statistical capacity in Africa. Data is not just a metric of development but increasingly recognised as a driver of it. We hope that our contribution will help with the skills development needed to take advantage of the data revolution.”

Over the course of the programme sponsorship, further outreach activities will be organised, such as providing access to our statistics journals, donating books to local libraries, and organising events for African researchers and authors in South Africa, Senegal, Ghana, Cameroon, Tanzania or Rwanda.

Building on established scholarly work in Africa, sponsors Taylor & Francis already operate an editorial office in Cape Town to support and strengthen regional journals in collaboration with learned societies and institutions and are actively involved in a number of other development initiatives in Africa, and further afield.

If you are a member of the Royal Statistical Society and would like to be involved by visiting an AIMS centre and teaching MSc students you can find more information on volunteering here, or read the experiences of Professor Ian Plewis, emeritus professor of social statistics at the University of Manchester, on his time volunteering to teach a three-week course at AIMS Tanzania.

More information on the support the Royal Statistical Society provides to AIMS can be found through here.
